Anubis Ancient God of the Dead, before Osiris took over the role.Anubis is now associated with the process of mummification and is Lord of Souls, guiding the souls of the dead into the underworld which the Ancient Egyptians thought was due West, hence the name “Foremost of the Westerners”.Although Anubis is often described as having the head of a jackal it is not known what canine Anubis derives his head from, as he is said to have the head of “Anubis animal” and it is unknown what animal this was. However, it is most likely to be a jackal as the Egyptians would have seen jackals prowling the cemeteries of the dead. The priest that would perform the ritual of mummification would wear a mask of Anubis, symbolically taking on the role of the God, as nobody else but Anubis is allowed to legitimately cut open the body during the preliminary act of mummification.Anubis is depicted as protector of the land of the souls, also known as Necropolis. As protector of these sacred lands he is often depicted as seated atop a mountain, where it is believed he would watch over the sacred cemeteries and burial grounds where he could watch for thieves and others that might desecrate the tombs of the dead.
